ITALIAN MELODRAMAS AT THE CROSSROADS OF THE ARTS

Silent films series with live musical accompaniment and workshops

February 1-17, 2018

The Jérôme Seydoux-Pathé Foundation and the Labex Arts-H2H of Université Paris 8, in partnership with the Université Paris Lumières, get together to present an exceptional program of silent Italian films. With films made by five Italian directors: Giovanni Pastrone, Carmine Gallone, Nino Oxilia, Roberto Roberti and Febo Mari, this program is the occasion to dive in the aesthetic, historical and cultural universe of the Italian production of the 1910s-1920s. Directed by Céline Gailleurd (Université Paris 8), this program includes 4 workshops and the screening of rare prints from Italian (Bologna, Rome, Turin, Milan) and European (Eye Filmmuseum) film archives. The screenings will be presented by French and Italian scholars.

 THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 1st – OPENING NIGHT
«Italian Melodramas at the Crossroads of the Arts»
7pm : Workshop with Gian Luca Farinelli (Cineteca di Bologna), Céline Gailleurd (Université Paris 8), Emmanuel Dreux (Université Paris 8) and Dork Zabunyan (Université Paris 8).
8pm : Screening of Sangue Bleu (Nino Oxilia, 1914) introduced by Gian Luca Farinelli. Improvised musical accompaniment by Jean-François Zygel.

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 6th – WORKSHOP & SCREENING
«Giovanni Pastrone, from passionate drama to brilliant invention»
5pm : Workshop with Claudia Gianetto (Museo Nazionale del Cinema di Torino), Lorenzo De Nicola (Chercheur et cinéaste), and Céline Gailleurd (Université Paris 8).
7pm : Screenings of the shorts Spergiura ! (Luigi Maggi, 1909) and Chi fu il colpevole (Itala Film, 1910), and of Tigre reale (Giovanni Pastrone, 1916), introduced by Claudia Gianetto.

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 13th – WORKSHOP & SCREENING
«Where the male divismo began»
5pm : Workshop with Denis Lotti (Università degli Studi di Padova) and Olivier Bohler (Université Paris 8).
7pm : Screenings of Cenere (Febo Mari, 1916) et Il Fauno (Febo Mari, 1917), introduced by Denis Lotti et Giulia Filacanapa (Université Paris 8).

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 16th – WORKSHOP & SCREENING
«Nino Oxilia – what literature did to cinema»
5pm : Workshop with Fabio Andreazza (Università Gabriele d’Annunzio di Chieti) and Christophe Gauthier (Ecole nationale des chartes).
7pm : Screenings of the restored version of Rapsodia Satanica (Nino Oxilia, 1917), introduced by Fabio Andreazza, music composed by Pietro Mascagni.
