It is with sadness that Domitor shares the news of the recent passing of our colleague Karel Dibbets on May 28th, 2017 at age 70. Karel was a major Dutch film historian whose writings significantly contributed to the study of film history in and of the Netherlands. He co-edited volumes such as Film and the First World War (Amsterdam: Amsterdam University Press, 1995) and Geschiedenis van de Nederlandse film en bioscoop tot 1940 [A history of cinema in the Netherlands until 1940] (Weesp: Wereldvenster, 1986). And his greatest work remains a database, entitled Cinema Context, an interactive encyclopedia of film culture in the Netherlands from 1896 to the present. At the dawn of the 21st century, Luke McKernan described it as “the finest film reference source on the Web”, epitomizing what “the new film research” should be.
Karel Dibbets’ legacy to our field won’t be forgotten.
