This synthetic book is aimed at the general public as much as students and moviegoers. It tells more than 120 years of film history giving the essential benchmarks – from the origins to the present day.
Almost a quarter of the book is dedicated to early cinema, presented in three sections:
1. Around 1895. Mirrors with memory
2. Around 1900. An invention with no future?
3. Around 1907. Telling with showing
In order to deliver basic analysis tools, the historical account is delineated with aesthetical subtitles such as, chronologically about early cinema: “the conquest of space: how to enter in the picture”, “linking shots”, “crosscutting”, “staging in depth”.
