Domitor and the University Laboratory for Audiovisual Preservation at Fluminense Federal University (LUPA-UFF) are pleased to invite applications for a two-day Graduate Workshop on June 8–9, 2026, immediately preceding the 19th International Domitor Conference, “(Dis)locating Early Cinema: Exchange, Extraction, Environment” on June 10–13, 2026.
The workshop offers graduate students of all levels and relevant disciplines a unique opportunity to learn about the collection and work of LUPA-UFF, the first film archive in Brazil dedicated to amateur cinema, whose audiovisual preservation activities are primarily carried out by undergraduate film students. The workshop will also include a visit to the new University Audiovisual Museum (Museu Audiovisual Universitário, MAU) and a guided tour of the old movie theaters in downtown Rio de Janeiro.
As the 2026 Domitor conference aims to “dislocate” early cinema, the graduate workshop will offer an opportunity to rethink historiographical and archival practices, objects, and approaches within different socio-cultural contexts, including from decolonial and postcolonial perspectives. In the spirit of promoting exchange, the workshop will also reflect on the history, preservation, and conceptualizations of early cinema in the Latin American context, and specifically in Brazil, in relation to other experiences and locations.
Participants will have an opportunity to discuss their own research projects and receive feedback from experienced researchers from different backgrounds, including Ian Christie (Birkbeck University of London), Grazia Ingravalle (Queen Mary University of London), and João Luiz Vieira (Fluminense Federal University). Workshop participants are also encouraged to attend the Domitor conference, June 10–13, and will receive a conference registration fee waiver.
The workshop will be held at the Institute of Art and Social Communication of UFF, on the Gragoatá campus, about 4 km from Cine Arte UFF, which will be the venue for the Domitor conference. Applications should include a 300-word statement of current or planned research, provide citations of any previous work (presentations, publications) in this area, and confirm your current student status and institutional affiliation. Send applications to domitor2026@gmail.com by January 31, 2026. Places are limited, and applicants will be notified of their acceptance by the beginning of February.
